Yesterday while attending Live2Lead in Orlando, Florida, I had the opportunity to watch my friend, co-teacher and coach deliver her first talk on her new book The Rules of Resilience. This is Valorie Burton’s 14th book and it is so full of wisdom through life, study and research- the best possible combination, to me.
As she told her impactful stories, she reminded us that we don’t just need resilience when we are challenged, but also in good times, as well. One of my favorite points- Rule #5: Rally your resources.
When we are needing resilience most is just the time we tend to forget the resources we have. That is why I am a big fan of writing down all of my resources so that when I need them or want them, I don’t need to think about it. People who are there for me, things I have invested in, etc- just knowing they are there can help me to be more resilient. I will say more about this book in the future!
While at the conference I had the opportunity to hear John C. Maxwell speak- several times over 3 days. He mentioned creativity several times and it really struck me- thinking about creativity as a leader? Allowing creativity as your people take the lead on the things. It may not be the way you would do it. Creativity in believing and living the truth that there is always an answer. Many times there is more than one. This mindset will keep you in the game longer than everyone else. Perseverance.
The most fun I had at the conference was when Jesse Cole of the Savannah Bananas spoke- wow! It was so powerful. He is all about the fans. (If you don’t know about the team, just google Savannah Bananas and you will quickly see what they are all about!) One thing he talked about was eliminating friction for people. How about just making things good for people? Put yourself in your “fan’s” shoes. Try things and fail- you have to get through the messy to get to the great. These were all thoughts that he shared with us- and more.
I will most definitely be sharing more from this conference. I took pages of notes. I am going through them now to devise my action plan. John reminded us that a notebook never made anyone successful- though I do believe that taking notes is essential- it is what we do with what we write down that counts.
