Is it ever okay to quit? Many of us grew up being taught that quitting is not okay. “Don’t be a quitter.” we heard.

Quitting– according to the dictionary- to stop or discontinue and action or activity. Quitting is a decision that is thoughtfully made, consideration is taken and the decision is made on purpose. To quit something that is not serving you in some way. It could be a habit or it could be a project, relationship or a job. The idea is that the quitting is for a reason that has been decided upon.

Giving up, on the other hand, is a reaction. It is not always thought out and may not be in the best interest of those involved. Things may have just gotten too overwhelming or busy or emotional- in some way beyond the capabilities of someone to handle in the moment. According to the dictionary giving up is connected to admitting defeat, failure, loss of hope, powerlessness, victimhood. The energy is very different.

Sometimes it is necessary to quit something , to go in a new direction (on purpose) when you realize something is not working, after giving it ample time.

What have you quit in the past?

When did you give up?

What would benefit you to quit right now?

What are your well thought out reasons for wanting to quit?

What is stopping you?

What is your plan to get past those obstacles?

Is it okay to quit? Yes!! If that is what makes the most sense for you, your wellbeing, your goals, your dreams.
